We went on the coolest field trip with Ashby’s 3rd grade class a couple of weeks ago. We went to see over 80,000 bats that have made their home under the McCarran bridge in Sparks just over the Truckee river. It was amazing. The ones that live here are micro bats so they are pretty small and kind of look like birds from far away. A bunch of 3rd grade classes met at a parking lot off Greg Street and make a small walk to the bridge. They all fly out to hunt for their dinner around 7:15ish each night. So we were there just in time to see them all take flight into the night! It was insane!!! I couldn’t believe how many there were. They just kept coming and coming out of the bridge. It was crazy. I have grown up and lived here my whole life and had NO idea there were bats living in Nevada let alone 80 thousand of them. It was pretty cool. I just took Ashby and Dalton with me. They LOVED it! So if you ever want to go see thousands of bats fly around up close and personal go check it out!! It is pretty incredible.
This is where they live in the cracks under the bridge. I didn’t want to get too close for fear of getting guano on me. Ha ha. :)
Here are some more pictures of the bats flying out from under the bridge. It was at least 30 minutes straight of bats flying out into the sky! There was a ton. I couldn’t believe it.
