Sacramento Zoo/Tiger Report

DSC_06354x6

Ashby’s 3rd grade class was able to go on a really neat field trip to the Sacramento Zoo this week.  Before they went to the zoo each student in her class did a research paper, project and class presentation on an animal they picked that we would later be able to see in person at the zoo.  Ashby was so excited when she got the animal she wanted: The Sumatran Tiger.  She worked really hard on her report and it turned out great.  It was 9 pages long, mostly of research she had done, it also had to included a Table of Contents, Glossary, and Bibliography.  It was all hand written so it was a lot of hard work.  I was proud of her diligence and persistence with not procrastinating and doing a page or so each night until it was all done.

We came up with the poster board project idea together.  Ashby really wanted to have a huge drawing of a Tiger with pictures and information around it.  I thought it turned out pretty good considering I definitely do not consider myself an artist of any kind.  I drew the outline and Ashby colored in the rest.  She added all the other details, words, and information too.  It was really fun to do together.  It took us a long time to get the poster all finished.

For her class presentation she made up a rap song all by herself to introduce the animal to the class that included a bunch of facts.  It was really cute!  Ashby is very creative and loves to write.  After the rap she did the rest of her presentation.   I was volunteering in Ashby’s class that day so I was able to see and record it.  She did an awesome job.  I was impressed how much she knew about this animal.  I was so proud of her.  Here was the rap she made up:

“Hey you, What’s your name?

Were going to learn the Sumatran Tiger rap today.

They eat meat ‘cause their carnivores.

They live on the jungle floors.

They have some stripes that they wear.  Actually they have some to spare.

They have reddish yellow fur and the loudest roar you’ve ever heard.

They like to swim and hunt with their retractable claws, please hold your applause.

They have sharp teeth and rounded ears, they’ve gotten these things over the years.

Now were done we have learned a lot.  Now its time to, stop.”
