For reading week at Ashby’s elementary school they had a bunch of professionals come and speak to the kids about their jobs and why reading is so important. Siobhan McAndrew a journalist who writes for the Reno Gazette Journal came and spoke to Ashby’s third grade class. She challenged them to write a letter to her telling about something they really wanted and if it was good she would print it in the paper. Ashby was so excited about the assignment. She is a talented writer and loves anything to do with writing. So she wrote her paper all on her own and we sent it off to the newspaper. A couple weeks later a friend of mine mentioned on Facebook she saw an article about Ashby’s letter in the paper! We were so excited, we had no idea she would be in there. We ran and got the paper(which was still on the front porch of course! Shows how much we actually read the paper!), and read the article together. It was on the front page of the Northern Nevada section. She was just thrilled. What a neat experience for her.
She wrote about the one thing she wanted was for people to donate to Primary Children's Medical Center through a program called Pennies by the Inch. Pretty neat stuff. She has always said she wanted to be a writer when she grows up, and I think she really does now more than ever! Too cute.
